They are intended to be inserted into a functional wood burning fireplace, whether it is a prefab or masonry fireplace.  These inserts utilize two tubes up your chimney with a specialized cap system. One tube is air intake and one is exhaust. These are completely sealed units with an automatic blower system that convert your fireplace into a beautiful burning high efficiency room furnace AND it will still heat efficiently during a power outage!
